Tips for Treating Your Horse with Omeprazole and Sucralfate

Timing suggestions for sucralfate dosage:

Sucralfate needs time to get into the horse’s system and create a protective barrier over the ulcer sites. It also must be fed prior to other medications to stop it binding with them in the stomach.

The recommended time to wait is one hour before feeding (and administering omeprazole and other medication).

Administer the sucralfate dosage as early as you can. For an average horse, this means feeding 3 x sachets of sucralfate. This should be administered with water, in a very small feed or hidden in treats.

After dosing, it’s optimum to wait 1 hour to feed your horse anything else (including Omeprazole or other medications)

Ideal sucralfate dosage for horses:

Average Horse:  3 x sachets up to 3 times a day*

Average Pony: 2 x sachets up to 3 times a day*

Ideally this should be fed an hour before the horse’s ‘main meal’ and any other medications (such as omeprazole).

*3 doses a day is the optimum amount – and for some people that’s just not possible. Don’t fret -sucralfate will still be effective with 2 doses per day.

Timing suggestions for omeprazole dosage:

Omeprazole needs to be feed dry. It is more effective if feed after a short fast of 30 minutes and also before exercise. It can be feed be feed in your horses feed if this is completely dry. Alternatively use one of the suggested methods below.

When treating with both Omeprazole and Sucralfate.

Administer Sucralfate first then wait a minimum of 30 mins to 1 hour before giving Omeprazole.

How to get your Horse to eat the granules:

The best way to get your horse to eat the granules:

1. Feed them in a handful of dry chop with a spoonful of oil, molasses or other sticky substance.

2. Take the core out of an apple or carrot and pour the granules in.

3. Put the granules inside a slice of bread. Fold over the bread and squeeze together.

4. Put the granules in a large syringe with a small amount of oil and squeeze the syringe into the horse's mouth

5. Put a blob of molasses on a spoon and stick the granules to it The scrap the spoon on your horses tongue depositing the granules and molasses.

****Remember they Omeprazole Granules must stay dry but the Sucralfate Granules can be dissolved or got wet if you require****

Weaning off the treatment:

Once your horse has completed it's treatment phase it is best to reduce their dosage gradually. (Reduction by one sachet per day less per week would be recommend.) Some horse can be completely taken off medication. In some cases if the reason the horse developed ulcers has not been completely addressed it maybe necessary to continue with a lower dose for maintenance purposes.
